Chris Lemonis and the Mississippi State baseball team are making a pretty big change as they move forward without pitching coach Scott Foxhall. In a news release on Monday, Lemonis, the head coach of the Miss. State Bulldogs, stated that the MSU pitching coach change was to take effect immediately.

Mississippi State’s news release noted that the Bulldogs and Foxhall were “parting ways.”

In the news release, Lemonis’ statement highlighted that the decision was in the “best interest of [the Mississippi State baseball] program.” Given that MS State is 14th in the SEC with a 9.82 ERA in conference games, it’s hard to disagree with that statement.

The Bulldogs have certainly struggled throughout the season, which is epitomized effectively by their 6-15 record against SEC teams in 2023.

So, yeah, it’s safe to say that something needs to change.

Lemonis did thank Foxhall for the contributions to MSU baseball, which includes his role on the 2021 national title team.

“He has played a significant role on our staff during his time here, including helping us win a College World Series Championship,” Lemonis statement reads. “I sincerely wish Scott and his family the absolute best in the future.”

And that’s fair.

It’s fair to root for Foxhall as he moves forward in his career. It’s certainly fair to want some sort of change to take place as the Bulldogs move forward.

Mississippi State’s problems likely won’t be totally solved by this. That said, this is an unfortunate step that likely had to happen for the Bulldogs to see any sort of improvement. While Foxhall was instrumental in the Bulldogs’ past success, MSU wasn’t thriving this year.

The Bulldogs have really fallen off the map as of late. Appropriately, Lemonis took responsibility for that in his news release statement.

“Starting with me as the leader of our program, I can assure you we are going to continue to work, prepare and compete as hard as possible to put a product on the field that meets the standard of Mississippi State Baseball,” Lemonis’ statement reads.

It remains to be seen what other changes might be made or how the Bulldogs will continue to adapt as they move forward. MSU’s news release did not state what sort of buyout situation Foxhall was under.

Mississippi State did not immediately announce who would take over as the pitching coach for Foxhall.

There are 11 games left on the 2023 MSU baseball schedule. The Bulldogs are currently 24-20 overall and 6-15 in SEC play. MSU inhabits the 6th spot in the SEC West standings.
