PULLMAN, Wash. – Unbeaten and at home, Jake Dickert and the Washington State football team are set to welcome the No. 14 ranked Oregon State Beavers to Gesa Field in Pullman on Saturday for both teams’ Pac-12 opener. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.

Cougars Riding High Heading Into Conference Play

Dickert and his Washington State Cougars are off to a hot start for the 2023 campaign. It’s never a bad thing to start the season with three straight wins, and that includes an impressive 31-22 victory over the then-No. 19 Wisconsin Badgers in Week 2.

Not a bad way to start the 2023 Washington State football season.

Thanks to the impressive play from Cougars quarterback Cameron Ward and Washington State wide receiver Lincoln Victor, Wazzu boasts a potent passing attack that is among the best in the country.

So far this season, the Cougars are averaging 400 yards per game. That should concern some Pac-12 teams.

Defensively, the Cougars have been stellar as well.

Washington State’s defense has some stars

Safety Jaden Hicks has been thrilling to watch and he was a much needed star when he recorded 9 tackles, a forced fumble and 2 pass breakups in that really solid win over the Badgers.

For the season, Washington State is allowing just 22.3 points per game. Pair that sort of defense with an offense that is putting up 48.3 points per game and it’s clear that the Cougars could have a really good team this year.

But the Cougars will need to try to contain a rather impressive offense from Oregon State.

Meanwhile, the Oregon State Beavers also enter this matchup with an unblemished record at 3-0. Oregon State has been able to record some solid wins over the likes of San Jose State, UC Davis, and San Diego State.

And so far this year, the Beavers are looking pretty impressive on both sides of the ball as well. Right now, the Oregon State football team is averaging 41 points per game on offense all while holding the Beavers’ foes to just 11 points per game on defense.

Oregon State’s rushing attack has been potent

Former Clemson Tigers Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei seems to be enjoying playing for Oregon State and has really found a groove lately as the Beavers’ starting quarterback. Uiagalelei hasn’t been perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but he’s thrown for 630 yards and 6 touchdowns against two interceptions all while running for 38 more yards and 3 touchdowns.

Washington State could have its hands full trying to contain the 6-4, 252 pound quarterback.

In addition to that, the Cougars will need to keep an eye on Oregon State receivers like Silas Bolden and Anthony Gould, who have combined for 315 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns through three games.

Oregon State has a rather balanced offense and that means the Beavers will focus on running the ball as well. So far, Beavers running back Damien Martinez has been stellar as he’s racked up 351 rushing yards all while averaging 8.8 yards per carry.

Will the Cougars be able to score on Oregon State’s defense?

It’s worth wondering how the Washington State offense will fare against a really disciplined and physical Oregon State defense. Again, Oregon State is holding opponents to just 11 points per game.

On top of that, OSU’s pass defense has been really solid. The Beavers are only allowing 202.3 passing yards per game and have only given up two passing touchdowns so far.

Washington State’s pass centric offense might have its work cut out for it Saturday evening.
