PULLMAN, Wash. – Saturday evening, the No. 14 Oregon State Beavers football team will take on their toughest test yet as they travel to get their Pac-12 slate started. The Oregon State football team is set to meet up with the Washington State Cougars at Gesa Field in what will be the Pac-12 opener for both the Cougars and the Beavers.

On the other side of things, Oregon State’s defense has been stifling so far.

The Beavers are allowing just 202.3 passing yards per game and have given up only 2 passing touchdowns. Opponents are averaging just 57.7 rushing yards per game against the Beavers defense.

Washington State boasts a high-powered offense led by quarterback Cameron Ward. The Cougars are averaging 48.3 points per game this season behind Ward and wide receiver Lincoln Victor. Their passing attack ranks among the best in the nation, averaging 400 yards per game through the air so far.

Defensively, Washington State is giving up 22.3 points per game. Safety Jaden Hicks has been a standout, recording 9 tackles, a forced fumble, and 2 pass breakups in the win over Wisconsin.

Keys for Oregon State football

If Oregon State is going to actually establish itself with a 4-0 start to the season, they will need to either contain Washington State’s explosive offense or find a way to keep up with what the Cougars want to do offensively.

And while the Beavers defense has been excellent against the pass so far, this will be the toughest test to date for OSU’s secondary. The Beavers will have the unenviable task of going against Ward and the Cougars aerial attack.

This is big for both programs who have effectively been abandoned by the rest of the Pac-12. Both are trying to stay unbeaten and have a shot at contending in the Pac-12. Winning this game goes a long way towards that.
