It’s a wordy headline, and I don’t totally think it’s my best work ever, but we’re going to go with it. Also, well, it’s not really breaking news at this point. We’re running a few days behind here at The Underdog Tribune.
But, well, that’s just life sometimes.
Part of why we’re running behind? I’m a dad of a couple kids and I don’t get much sleep nor am I able to consume enough coffee to keep up with all of life’s adventures. And while I’d love to blame the recent (and bizarre) snowstorm in the greater Houston metropolitan area (and really much of the South) for being behind on things, I just can’t do that and maintain a clear conscience.
It wouldn’t be right to blame the snow for me being behind on my obligations in life. I’m just tired these days.
I’m sure John Mark Comer would prescribe that I pay more attention to practices and spiritual disciplines associated with rest and the Sabbath, but hey, I’m a work in progress.
Anyways, something I can blame the snow for?
Shutting down pretty much the entirety of the Bayou City. We’re not used to frozen precipitation in this part of the world. It just doesn’t happen much here in Houston. And so, when the snowstorm rolled through, the airports shut down.
Now, I don’t fault the airlines or officials trying to keep folks safe. We just don’t have the infrastructure or systems in place to deal with snow (because it really doesn’t happen here much).
And while I thoroughly enjoyed the time stomping in the snow and throwing snowballs and watching my kids react to the frigid temps and the fun version of frozen water (and just generally making some of the best memories I’ve had in quite some time with my family), it’s still probably worth a little note that there is an element of this that makes it a slightly bittersweet thing.
The snowstorm, as fun and memorable as it was, actually coincided with a trip I was hoping to take from Houston to Columbus, Ohio to cover a couple notable members of the Ohio State Buckeyes celebrating a national title win over Notre Dame by going to Raising Cane’s to meet with fans, eat some chicken, work the drive-thru, and just generally enjoy life.
We don’t live in a perfect world, because a perfect world would have afforded me the chance to play in the snow with my wife and kids and also for me to go to Ohio for a fun work trip.
So, what we’ll do here is get creative with a bit of problem solving.
Snow is fun and mildly inconvenient, but the Raising Cane’s PR team is great and creative
In addition to cherishing the memories I got with my family (it was legitimately one of the best things ever to see my son run around in the snow and to witness my infant daughter fight with me and my wife about the need to come inside because she was enjoying watching the miracle of snow falling), I also still got a chance to also cover the Raising Cane’s event, albeit from afar.
Which, thanks to the brilliant people who do public relations and media relations for Raising Cane’s (I’m an adjunct professor in marketing, so I feel qualified to say that they do a good job at what they do), I was able to get access to assets to cover the event from my home in the greater Houston metropolitan area.
But, well, I’m still even a little bit behind on that. (Sorry, Amy!) That said, I do have a few links to share. So, I’ll do that here:

It’s actually pretty late now, and I’m sure I’ll get some more writing done about all of this soon enough. At least, I have a few more drafts put together. The goal is to get those published. We’ll see if life gets in the way of that or not.
