Look, things are awful for Mississippi State baseball fans right now. Heck, the Miss. State baseball season is truly awful. And it’s hard to really describe that in words. So let’s take a look at some numbers.
We’re going to take a look at some truly distressing numbers.
As Mississippi State Bulldog baseball fans, we all know that the 2023 MSU Baseball season has been a challenging one. The team has struggled to win games against tough opponents like Vanderbilt Commodores and the Kentucky Wildcats.
And there’s no doubt that the Miss. State baseball team is having a miserable time as well.
But these numbers should help put things in perspective as to just how bad everything has been for this Miss. State baseball team.
16.11: That is Mississippi State baseball’s ERA vs. SEC teams
The Bulldogs’ baseball team hasn’t even faced many foes yet. We’re not even to April. But the Bulldogs have clearly already had a tough season against SEC teams, with their earned run average (ERA) standing at 16.11.
This figure is a far cry from the team’s usual performance and has been a cause of concern for the Mississippi State Bulldogs and their fans.
This is a bad number. A really bad number.
Meanwhile, MSU’s opponents have posted a 3.64 ERA during SEC games. That’s a pretty big difference from what MSU is recording right now!
.237: Mississippi State baseball’s batting average vs. SEC teams
Well, the pitching isn’t working. So maybe the bats are hot and keeping things moving in the right direction, right?
Uh. Well, the Bulldogs have a .237 batting average in 5 SEC games and they’ve managed to hit 5 home runs. That’s, uh, underwhelming. Especially in the context of what the Bulldogs are capable of.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs’ opponents have a .355 batting average in SEC contests. And they’ve hit a lot more home runs…
14: Which is the number of home runs SEC teams have hit in 5 games
Yeah. The Bulldogs are hitting a home run a game in SEC play. That’s not too bad, all things considered.
But when compared to the fact that, in five SEC games, the Kentucky Wildcats and Vanderbilt Commodores managed to average nearly 3 home runs a game, then MSU’s home run per game average looks pretty meager.
The SEC average for SEC vs. SEC baseball contests? Well, that’s sitting at 1.3 home runs per game. So… MSU baseball fans get to witness a lot of home runs being hit.
Unfortunately for fans and the team alike, those homers aren’t being hit by the Bulldogs.
72: The number of RBIs SEC teams have vs. MS State baseball
Mississippi State has given up an absurd number of RBIs through just five SEC games. FIVE SEC GAMES AND THE BULLDOGS HAVE ALLOWED FOR 72 RBIs TO BE HIT.
THAT’S PAINFUL TO IMAGINE.
Meanwhile, MSU has just 17 RBIs against SEC foes in five games. The SEC average for SEC games? Well, that’s 5.5 RBIs per game. If you don’t have a calculator in front of you, it’s worth keeping in mind that Miss. State’s average is sitting at 3.4.
And the Bulldogs’ foes are averaging 14.4!!!
60: The run differential between MSU baseball and SEC opponents after 5 games
In five SEC games (just five games), Mississippi State has been outscored 79-19. The Bulldogs are scoring 3.8 runs per game against foes from the Southeastern Conference. In five games, Kentucky and Vanderbilt have averages 15.8 runs per game.
The SEC average in conference games? Well, that’s sitting at 6.
That’s a massive issue for Mississippi State and the Bulldogs won’t be able to win many conference contests if that issue keeps existing.
Can these MSU baseball issues be fixed?
Man, I hope so. I truly do. I want these players and coaches to succeed, but there’s likely no easy answer to everything that’s going on right now. The 2023 MSU baseball season is still young, but it’s hard to imagine that things will improve overnight.
But hey, theoretically, there’s a chance that things might get better sooner rather than later.
We can all hold out hope, right?
