Well, after just two games, the Mississippi State baseball team has lost the series against the Kentucky Wildcats.
The 2023 Mississippi State baseball season continues to be full of frustation and underwelming losses.
While the Kentucky Wildcats are a good team, the Mississippi State Bulldogs were completely and totally steamrolled on Saturday in a game that unfortunately got away from MSU in a hurry.
Mississippi State baseball drops Kentucky Wildcats series
After jumping out to a 3-0 lead over Kentucky heading into the bottom of the 4th inning, the Bulldogs completely crumbled and allowed the Wildcats to score eight runs in the 4th and 5th innings.
And then Kentucky just kept on rolling. By the time the game was over, MSU gave up four more runs as the Wildcats went on to win 12-3.
The Bulldogs are now 13-7 on the season and are 0-2 in SEC play.
This is absolutely not the way that Mississippi State needed to get SEC play started. While the Wildcats have a solid roster, the Bulldogs now need to find a way to keep from being swept.
Mississippi State pitching struggles once more
The Bulldogs had another less-than-stellar day out on the mound.
Landon Gartman, typically a consistent and solid starting pitcher for MSU, struggled from the get go. Through 4.0 innings pitched, Gartman tossed 93 pitches and struck out 7, but he walked 4 batters, gave up 3 hits, and then was hit with 7 earned runs.
The relief pitching was a bit better as Brock Tapper, Logan Forsythe, and Will Gibbs combined to go 5 innings and gave up 7 hits and 3 earned runs while striking out 5 batters.
Now the Bulldogs will try to avoid being swept. It remains to be seen if that will happen. Here’s to hoping that the Bulldogs can do something to bounce back and get a much needed win.
