Mississippi State’s first game in the TaxAct Clearwater Invitational went exceptionally well as the Mississippi State Bulldogs bludgeoned the Indiana Hoosiers in a run rule victory.
And this sort of win was huge for Ricketts and the Mississippi State Bulldogs. MSU’s struggles to score a bit last weekend dampened what had previously been a strong start to the season. But now things look a bit brighter after a dominant showing vs. the Hoosiers.

The Bulldogs went out and took control of this game very early on. State started out with a 1-0 lead in the first inning after an RBI single from Matalasi Faapito scored Macy Graf. Then a solo shot home run from Aquana Brownlee in the second inning gave State a 2-0 advantage.
Indiana trimmed the lead a bit in the third inning, cutting into MSU’s advantage by scoring off an RBI single, but that really didn’t impact the game in any significant way.
Why?
Because Mississippi State went on a scoring spree, putting 10 more runs on the board between the third and fourth innings.
Kiersten Landers launched a solo shot home run of her own in the third and then things got real fun for the Bulldogs. With a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the fourth inning, Mississippi State then added nine more runs to the scoreboard, thanks in part to this grand slam:
Aquana Brownlee thrives as Bulldogs beat Indiana softball
Brownlee was phenomenal. Absolutely phenomenal. Home runs are great and fun and really enjoyable to watch. Grand slams are just flat out better than that. And Brownlee hit one of each!
In 3 at bats, Brownlee had 3 hits, one of which was a home run and one of which was this magnificent grand slam:
Mississippi State’s Josey Marron’s complete game was impressive
Marron, a freshman, was able to really keep the Indiana Hoosiers from doing anything of consequence all throughout the game. And that’s definitely something good to see from a new, young pitcher.
Marron only pitched through 5.0 innings thanks to the run ruling that happened, but she was efficient and effective all the way through. Marron threw 82 pitches, striking out 4 batters and only allowing 2 earned runs.
The Bulldogs will need that sort of showing once SEC play rolls around. But for now, let’s celebrate how great that performance was.
