This might seem obvious, but the Mississippi State baseball team needs just two more wins this season for it to claim the first team national championship in school history.
Take a moment to reflect on that.
The last time Mississippi State in contention for a national championship was when Vic Schaefer was leading the Mississippi State women’s basketball team against Notre Dame in 2018. A year prior to that, Schaefer and the Bulldogs faced South Carolina in the national title game.
Unfortunately for the Mississippi State faithful, the Bulldogs came up short both times.
This is the second time Mississippi State is competing in the College World Series finals
Despite Mississippi State’s proud history and tradition surrounding college baseball and making it to the College World Series, the Bulldogs have only made it to the CWS finals once before this season.
Four years before MSU was competing for a title in the 2017 NCAA women’s basketball tournament, John Cohen helped lead the 2013 Mississippi State baseball team all the way to the College World Series finals where the Bulldogs met up with the UCLA Bruins.
Again, unfortunately for us, Mississippi State wasn’t able to get that long desired championship. MSU was swept in two games.
Not getting that final win shouldn’t take away from how great those seasons were for Mississippi State, but it is frustrating for the Bulldogs to have come so close and to have fallen short on the biggest stage like that.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs have an opportunity to finally claim a national title
Look, it won’t be easy for the Bulldogs to actually get this done. MSU’s opponent in the College World Series finals happens to be the Vanderbilt Commodores and the Vanderbilt Commodores are REALLY good at this college baseball thing.
They’ve consistently been one of the best teams in the country this year and are defending a national title of their own, the 2019 College World Series championship.
MSU can’t afford to slip up at any point when it faced Vandy. If the Bulldogs are going to take this series, they’ll need to play the best baseball they have all year. But, it’s totally possible for this group to do that. At least in theory.
Regardless, this season has been great. This team has overcome incredible challenges time and time again. And now it’s set to compete for a championship.
All we need is two wins.
That’s it.
No big deal.
How to visit Omaha for the College World Series: Where to eat?
With the College World Series set to start, NCAA baseball fans from all over the country will be headed to Omaha, Nebraska, to watch the country’s eight best teams play each other with the goal of winning a championship. While it’s often overlooked, Omaha is a city that deserves more credit for everything it has to offer.
I actually had the pleasure of living in Omaha for a couple of years and, despite the bitter winters, I thoroughly enjoyed my time living in the Midwest.
Omaha is a wonderful city with a great food scene, plenty of bars (especially sports bars), and a solid amount of nightlife.
There’s always something happening somewhere in town and, thanks to the size and layout of the city, it’s pretty easy to get just about anywhere you need within 20 to 30 minutes.
If you’ve got the opportunity to go see the College World Series, you should definitely take it.
And if you’ll be in Omaha, it’s worth getting a few ideas on what to do while you’re there. That’s what this guide is for, to help you get some ideas on what to do during your trip to see your team in the CWS.
