“I’ll give you $100 if you order me some.”
The offer came from a lingering UW student, as the roaring crowd began to thin outside Raising Cane’s brand new location in Seattle.
I declined… mostly because the person manning the register was Sam Darnold, and fresh off a Super Bowl victory, Seattle’s championship quarterback had better things to do than facilitate any bribery schemes.

Instead, he spent his afternoon working a shift at Washington’s first Cane’s location while fielding questions about bringing a Lombardi Trophy home to the Pacific Northwest.
Hours earlier, the scene outside the restaurant was completely different. A sea of blue and green stretched down several blocks—fans who’d been waiting five hours, according to students camped at the front, all eager for a glimpse of the Seahawks’ Super Bowl-winning Quarterback.

You could feel Darnold’s arrival before you saw it. The crowd erupted as his matte black Audi pulled to the entrance, cheers echoing down the block.
As he made his way inside, enthusiasm beaming off his face, I could tell by his pace that Darnold was more than eager to get his shift started.
After a quick change into his shiny new threads (his Cane’s uniform), Darnold made his way downstairs for a short conference with local press, where he was not shy about how much this opportunity meant to him.
“I love Raising Cane’s, you know, it is my cheat meal on the weekends… It’s such a great opportunity to be with this brand and have this opportunity as well to spend some time with the fans,” he shares.

One reporter even went so far as to ask Darnold a question in bird language—knowing the quarterback’s fascination with backyard bird calls, he delivered his question entirely in chirps.
His response: “This whole bird thing is getting out of control.”
But if you ask me, his app is coming in handy, and he understood that question perfectly!
Just as the press conference wraps up, the fans’ anticipation to hear from the champ has hit a peak, and Darnold delivers a response I believe captures the essence of his devotion to the Emerald City.
“You can tell by the way that they cheer for us, you know? They care so much about our team and everything that we stand for. We try to put our best foot forward, and we try to put the best product out there on the field for the fans. And you know, I’m just glad that we got to live up to it.”

Throughout the whole event, Darnold always made sure to pause and connect with the devoted members of the crowd, and even through messing up a line or two in his scripted filming, he never dropped a smile.
There is something so heartwarming about the way Darnold carries himself, even in the midst of all this praise and celebration.
Listening to people call him “the greatest underdog story of all time,” watching him laugh off mistakes and light up at every interaction, I couldn’t help but picture him as that kid picking up a football for the first time, driven by nothing but pure passion and joy for the game.

Those qualities are still there. You can see it in the way he works that counter, handing out chicken fingers with the same enthusiasm he brings to the field. Because for Sam Darnold, it’s never really been about the accolades, it’s about the love of the game and the people around him who make it all possible.
Darnold closed the event with a heartfelt speech to the frenzied fans, thanking them for their unwavering support and promising this was just the beginning.
With a Box Combo clutched in one hand and his belongings in the other, he made his way toward the exit, flashing the same genuine smile that had lit up the room when he first arrived.
