After Jeff Lebby left the Baylor Bears and moved on to the Southeastern Fire, he brought the offense he’d been developing with Art Briles on over to Florida to help out the Southeastern Fire.

And while Southeastern University is a small Christian college in Florida that most college football fans may not be familiar with, it’s worth understanding that they very quickly improved their offense with Jeff Lebby as their offensive coordinator in 2017.

  2. 2017 Southeastern Fire stats: Wide receivers

This is part of a project of tracking the entirety of Jeff Lebby’s offenses (prior to his stop in Starkville, for now at least). So, here you go. This is just one slice of the project.

Meet LaQuvionte Gonzalez, Southeastern’s record-setting receiver

There’s some issues with data and their stat attribution from the season, but, from what I can tell, this is how Southeastern’s wide receivers did in Lebby’s system in 2017.

They were good. Not the most well-rounded bunch, but LaQuvionte Gonzalez? Well, he was incredible. The 5-11, 175 pound senior from Cedar Hill, Texas caught 60 passes for over 1000 yards and 10 touchdowns.

I’ve long been an advocate for getting more Texans to Starkville and maybe Lebby can do just that. Because that sort of offensive production? Well, it’d be great to see in Maroon and White.

Gonzalez was, by far, their most dangerous receiving threat and the Fire were able to get the ball to him routinely. Their offense wasn’t as pass-dominant as many of Lebby’s other offenses (and the offenses he’s been affiliated with) have been, but it was clear that Lebby enjoyed ensuring that Gonzalez got the ball.

Here’s what all of the stats look like for the Fire from Lebby’s time in Lakeland, Florida for the 2017 Southeastern football season:

2017 Southeastern Fire stats: Wide receivers

NameReceptionsYardsTD
Gonzalez, LaQuvionte60101810
Miller, Bryce243192
Northington, Marque172242
Thomas, LaDarrius91001
McGehee, Tanner5620
Porter, Jernard2221
Toombs, Adam2150
Burgess, Cody170
Williams, Tyrell140

Aside from Gonzalez, Bryce Miller and Marque Northington both did well. Combined, they caught 41 receptions for 543 yards and 4 touchdowns. For an offense that was very run heavy (they THRIVED in gashing folks on the ground), that’s a decent grouping of the top three receivers for the Southeastern Fire.

There’s a steep drop off from the top receiver to the next two and then there’s even more of a drop off from there. Here’s to hoping that, in Lebby’s time in Starkville, we don’t necessarily see that drastic of a gap between the top receivers and the folks lower down on the stat sheet.
