This year hasn’t been great for the Kentucky softball team, but really it’s tough to compete week in and week out within the Southeastern Conference. And Kentucky found that out this season.

The Wildcats have shown the ability to win a few games here and there, but struggles in conference competition led to UK ending towards at the bottom of the Southeastern Conference softball standings.

And thus, a not so great spot in the 2024 SEC softball tournament for the Kentucky softball team.

The Kentucky Wildcats (30-21, 8-16 SEC) enter the 2024 SEC softball tournament as the No. 12 seed. There’s a long way to go for the Wildcats if they’re hoping to make some noise in the SEC Tournament.

That said, Kentucky has had some solid moments here and there. Kentucky did beat the Stanford Cardinal on a couple occasions. And then there was a series win over the Alabama Crimson Tide.

But UK softball did not consistently live up to that sort of potential throughout the season.

3 Kentucky softball players to watch during the 2024 SEC Tournament:

  1. Erin Coffel: Kentucky does have the ability to score some runs and Erin Coffel is instrumental in making that happen for the Wildcats. This season, Coffel leads Kentucky with 13 home runs and 44 walks. And she’s doing that all while maintaining a solid .336 batting average and driving in 33 runs.
  2. Rylea Smith: Leading Kentucky with a team-high .378 batting average, Rylea Smith is a consistent offensive threat whenever she’s up to bat. She doesn’t have a ton of power, but shehas contributed 4 home runs, 24 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases.
  3. Grace Lorsung: Hey, look, another potent bat in the lineup for the Wildcats. Grace Lorsung has launched 13 of her own homers and driven in 34 runs all while hitting with a .286 batting average.

Final thoughts as Kentucky softball prepares for the SEC Tournament

It’s safe to say that Kentucky’s path to success in the 2024 SEC tournament won’t be easy. They’ve got the play in game against the Ole Miss Rebels and then there’s the Missouri Tigers waiting for whichever team is able to win game 1.

That said, the Wildcats do have some pretty impressive offensive firepower. Their pitching staff hasn’t had the most fun this season, but maybe things will get put together at the right moment for Kentucky.

It’s a lot of fun watching a team score a lot of runs. Kentucky’s path to success in the SEC tournament likely revolves around their offensive firepower and that pitching staff doing just enough.

I’m intrigued by the possibility of Kentucky getting hot at the right moment and causing a little chaos in the SEC softball tournament. Let’s see if that happens.
