FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Saturday afternoon, the Mississippi State softball team suffered a bit of a setback in the series against the #18 Arkansas Razorbacks. The Mississippi State Bulldogs fell 3-0 in a pitching-dominated Game 2. And that’s going to force a rubber match to decide the SEC series that State could have claimed today with a win.

The impressive Arkansas pitching duo of Hannah Camenzind and Morgan Leinstock stifled the Bulldogs’ bats and helped the Razorbacks claim that 3-0 win.

Camenzind started the game for the Razorbacks and set the tone early, keeping the Mississippi State softball team off-balance with her effective pitching. She tossed four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out one batter. Leinstock followed suit, pitching three shutout innings in relief to secure the save and the victory for Arkansas.

On the other side, Mississippi State’s Josey Marron put forth a valiant effort in the circle, despite being saddled with the loss. Marron pitched a complete game, allowing three runs (two of which happened to be earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out one Razorback. While Marron’s performance kept the Bulldogs within striking distance, the offense could not provide the necessary support.

And, well, there’s that loss that MSU got.

Mississippi State softball’s bats stymied by Arkansas pitching in game 2 loss

Arkansas struck first in the bottom of the opening frame, as Bri Ellis launched a solo home run to give the Razorbacks an early 1-0 lead. They added another run in the third inning, courtesy of an RBI double by Kennedy Miller. The Razorbacks tacked on an insurance run in the sixth, making it a 3-0 ballgame.

The Bulldogs’ offense, which had been so potent in the series opener, was held in check throughout the contest. Mississippi State managed just two hits, a double by Jessie Blaine and a single by Paige Cook. The team struggled to capitalize on the few opportunities they had, leaving three runners on base and hitting into two double plays.

What’s next for Mississippi State softball?

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Mississippi State softball team and evened the series at one game apiece.

As the Bulldogs look ahead to the series finale on Sunday, MSU will need to regroup and find a way to reignite the offense. Much of Mississippi State’s success this season has been built on a balanced attack, with contributions coming from throughout the lineup.

If the Bulldogs hope to secure a series win against a ranked opponent on the road, the Bulldogs must find a way to break through against Arkansas’ formidable pitching.
