The Mississippi State softball team has made it back home to Starkville and is looking for an opportunity to get a big SEC series win against the Arkansas Razorbacks.
The Bulldogs won’t have just a simple, easy time winning against Arkansas, but MSU has been pretty good and returning home might be just what State needs this weekend.
Mississippi State softball preview: Arkansas Razorbacks series
If you weren’t already aware, Arkansas is an incredible team. The Razorbacks have been solid all season long and they definitely have a team that should be concerning for any and all of their opponents.
Led by some dominant pitching and a solid enough offensive approach, this is a team that is ranked in the top 10 for a really good reason.
3 Arkansas softball players to watch
Chenise Delce
Mississippi State will need to find a way to be productive at the plate if the Bulldogs are going to really keep up with Arkansas. With Delce boasting a 13-4 record and 102 strikeouts, that might be difficult. Delce also has 9 complete games so far this year.
Robyn Herron
In case you thought Arkansas only had one great pitcher, Robyn Herron has also been really solid for the Razorbacks. So far, Herron has 87 strikeouts in just 54.0 innings pitched.
Rylin Hedgecock
Home runs are always fun. Except when someone else is hitting them. And Rylin Hedgecock already has 14 home runs so far this season. That sure will be something to watch this weekend.

3 MSU softball vs. Arkansas softball storylines to watch
Can MSU limit Arkansas’ home runs?
The Razorbacks are are well rounded and solid at just about everything. That should be a concern for MSU. But the biggest difference between the two teams is that Arkansas has been able to consistently hit home runs. MSU hasn’t been quite as dominant in this area. That could be an issue.
Will MS State be able to score against Arkansas’ dominant pitching?
The Bulldogs are going to face a really well rounded group of pitchers who can cause problems for opponents. Mississippi State doesn’t really get many breaks this weekend because of how good Chenise Delce and Robyn Herron are.
MSU’s pitching is solid. Will these games be low-scoring?
The Bulldogs have some really solid pitchers of their own. Can the Bulldogs keep Arkansas’ bats quiet and find a way to win some games, even if things are low scoring contests? Heck, would three low-scoring games be best for Ricketts and the Bulldogs?

Mississippi State softball prediction: Can the Bulldogs take two from Arkansas?
This isn’t going to be easy, but it might theoretically be more manageable than MSU’s series against the Georgia Bulldogs. Last weekend was a pretty good indicator of how the Mississippi State softball program still has some work to do as it develops.
Ricketts has brought this program pretty far, but there’s still improvements to be made.
And well, that brings us to this series then, doesn’t it?
MSU sofbtall vs. Arkansas SEC stats
Arkansas, clearly, has been solid. The Razorbacks are a concerning threat to MSU softball success, unfortunately. And there’s a very good chance that this particular series could go south in a hurry.
However.
There’s an opportunity here for MSU to really take a step forward. And should that happen for the Bulldogs, then maybe things can improve in a hurry. After all, this. is the same team that swept South Carolina and looked impressive doing it.
Let’s take a look at this series and see how the two teams compare statistically in SEC play right now.
Mississippi State softball
- ERA: 3.50
- Opponents’ ERA: 4.11
- Batting average: .183
- Opponents’ batting average: .282
- Home runs: 4
- Opponents’ home runs: 5
- Errors: 5
- Opponents’ errors: 1
It’s totally possible that the Bulldogs going to Georgia a weekend ago threw things off statistically. So far MSU has only played 5 SEC games and that is truly a pretty small sample size.
But 5 errors and a .183 batting average is concerning. There’s really no other way to put that.
Arkansas
- ERA: 2.73
- Opponents’ ERA: 4.30
- Batting average: .243
- Opponents’ batting average: .249
- Home runs: 9
- Opponents’ home runs: 7
- Errors: 11
- Opponents’ errors: 8
Up to this point, Arkansas has played 9 SEC games. A good bit more than MSU. And while that’s still something of a small sample size, it’s manageable and worth examining a bit.
And so far, Arkansas seems a bit… human? They aren’t invincible. Nor should they be looked at in that light. But the Bulldogs will need to play sharp softball and limit errors. Mistakes could make things painful in a hurry.
Expect Arkansas to take the series, but MSU softball shouldn’t be swept this weekend.
