The Mississippi State Bulldogs are heading to Athens, Georgia for an important SEC softball series against the UGA Bulldogs.

Samantha Ricketts and her Mississippi State softball team have had some ups and downs, but MSU has been on a roll this season and will look to continue their 4-game winning streak against one of the best college softball programs around.

This series has all the makings of an exciting matchup between two teams who are currently hanging out towards to the top of the SEC standings. Mississippi State is looking to build on its impressive momentum after sweeping the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Meanwhile Georgia is looking to continue its conference dominance after steamrolling the Texas A&M Aggies a weekend ago. It should be a thrilling weekend as both teams battle it out for bragging rights in this crucial conference matchup.

Mississippi State softball preview: Georgia Bulldogs series

This series will be anything but a given for Ricketts and her MSU softball team. The Bulldogs are going to face one of the toughest teams in the country in Georgia. As State heads east, here are three opposing players to keep an eye on this weekend.

3 Georgia softball players to watch

Sara Mosley

MSU’s pitching staff will have to account for Sara Mosley, a senior who is hitting .400 so far in SEC play and boasts 5 home runs in just 6 SEC games. That’s a little intimidating.

Madison Kerpics

Through SEC play, Madison Kerpics has been incredible. In SEC play, the junior pitcher has already posted two complete games and has a 3-1 win-loss record. Through 22.1 innings pitched during conference play, Kerpics has a 1.88 ERA and 26 strikeouts.

Shelby Walters

MSU will also have to keep up with Shelby Walters, a grad student pitcher who has proven to be tough to face as well. During SEC games, Walters has a 2.14 ERA and has 12 strikeouts in 19.2 innings pitched.

3 MS State softball vs. Georgia storylines to watch

Can MSU continue its SEC success away from Starkville?

The Bulldogs were able to get a solid sweep of the South Carolina Gamecocks, but that was in Nusz Park back in Starkville. Will playing on the road impact MSU any? Or is this just simply a non-factor? So far, MSU has an 11-4 record in home games and an 11-4 record in games away from Starkville (2-0 in away games and 9-4 in neutral site contests).

Will Mississippi State be able to keep up with Georgia’s impressive hitting?

So far this season, Georgia has hit 50 home runs. Mississippi State doesn’t have the slugging power to match that as Ricketts’ Bulldogs have hit 28 home runs so far this year. I’m a little concerned about how many home runs Georgia hits.

How will MSU’s pitching fare against Georgia’s hitting?

Last weekend, Mississippi State was able to quiet the South Carolina Gamecock’s bats and the Bulldogs were able to get three impressive wins because of strong pitching performances. But Georgia is one of the best teams in the country and has a .338 team batting average. They’ve hit 50 home runs. That’s concerning!
