The 2023 Mississippi State softball season is off to a pretty solid start. While Samantha Ricketts and the MSU Bulldogs weren’t able to start the 2023 NCAA softball season in Starkville at Nusz Park because of some facility improvements being made at home, State still got the season started in a strong manner.

Mississippi State softball notches solid win over FAU
It’s always fun to get a five-run win in a season opener. The Mississippi State Bulldogs got just that in their 7-2 win over the FAU Owls.
Timely hitting helps Mississippi State Bulldogs
It always helps to get some good hits here and there. That, you know, generally leads to scoring some runs, which is important for anyone trying to get some wins. And it’s worth noting that the Mississippi State Bulldogs had a great game against Florida Atlantic University, thanks to some hitting on the part of the Bulldogs.
Notably, Chloe Malau’ulu launched a home run to start the scoring in the top of the 1st inning, and then MSU was able to get an RBI triple from her again later in the 4th. Madisyn Kennedy hit an RBI double and then Aquana Brownlee brought another run home in the 5th, giving MSU a 5-2 lead.
The Bulldogs added two more runs thanks to Jackie McKenna’s double to center and Kiersten Landers hitting an RBI single.
And the Bulldogs won 7-2.
MSU softball utilizes trio of pitchers in season opener
Three pitchers saw action for the Bulldogs as Aspen Wesley got things started and went 3.1 innings. Wesley ended up striking out 5 batters, but it is worth noting that she allowed 6 hits. State then turned to Kenley Hawk, who struck out 3 in 2.2 innings pitched. Reis Beuerlein also got to throw a bit and struck one batter out during her time in the circle.

Two-run home runs are always good. Two-run home runs as the first home run of the season for your team are very good. Shoutout to Chloe Malau’ulu who got the season started with this wonderful homer.
The impact of MSU’s win over FAU
What does this win mean for Mississippi State? First and foremost, wins are always worth celebrating.
But, well, there’s not a ton of significance as FAU isn’t exactly a powerhouse and wasn’t all that great a season ago, but the Mississippi State softball season started off with a solid win. And to get that win on the road and start building some momentum is pretty good.
If the Bulldogs can keep winning, then let’s keep celebrating. And since the season started with a win, let’s celebrate a little bit.
